In her long career, Sigourney Weaver has helped shape modern sci-fi, but sheās only now stepping into the 'Star Wars' universe. In a recent note reflecting on her involvement in The Mandalorian & Grogu, the actor explained why the project felt unexpectedly personal and expressed her sincere thanks for the fans around the world who have followed along with her trips into genre film.
In the movie, Weaver plays Colonel Ward, a New Republic authority figure and former Rebel Alliance pilot who sends Din Djarin on a mission to the Outer Rim. While she avoided specific plot details, she emphasized how much she enjoyed stepping into a role defined by experience and leadership, and how grateful she is that she's been involved with science fiction juggernauts like Aliens and Avatar.
Here's what she had to say:
'Over the years, Iāve learned that when youāve been part of stories people love, those stories never really let go and neither do the imaginations around them. Iāve seen a lot of excitement and speculation lately, and while Iām always touched by it, I wanted to share something that is very real and very close to my heart.'
'This May, Iāll be appearing in The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Iām genuinely thrilled for audiences to finally experience it. Stepping into the Star Wars universe was something I never expected earlier in my career, and yet it felt like the right adventure at exactly the right moment. The film carries a wonderful balance of heart, humor, and danger, the kind of storytelling that reminds us why these worlds endure.'
'What struck me most about this project wasnāt just the scale or the legacy, but the intimacy at its core. At the center of it all is connection, between unlikely allies, across generations, and between duty and compassion. Working alongside such a talented cast and creative team was a joy, and watching Grogu continue to capture hearts is something truly special to witness up close.'
'I remain endlessly grateful for the love that continues to surround Alien, Avatar, and so many other chapters of my life on screen. Those films shaped me, and I carry them with me always. But I also believe deeply in moving forward in embracing new stories, new voices, and new galaxies.'
'Thank you for your curiosity, your passion, and your willingness to come along for the ride, wherever it leads next. I canāt wait to share this journey with you when The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives this May. Love yāall so much.'

She mentions Grogu (who many refer to as 'Baby Yoda') in her note, and she's previously said that the character is why she chose to join the film. Why? Because, she says, Grogu is 'a little badass.'
While many do not think of Weaver as a 'genre' actor, she has been an icon in 'geek culture' ever since her appearance in 1979's sci-fi powerhouse Alien. A movie, ironically, that was made possible by the global phenomenon that was 'Star Wars' just two years before.
The Mandalorian & Grogu will be released on May 22, 2026.
