Robert Duvall married four times during his life.

The Oscar-winning actor died at age 95, his fourth wife, Luciana Duvall, announced on Facebook on Feb. 16. "Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort," she wrote.

A few years prior, The Godfather star opened up to PEOPLE about his relationship with Luciana, saying the best part of getting older was his “day to day with my wonderful wife."

"She takes care of me, and I have good friends, and try to work out and keep in some kind of shape," he added in 2021.

Duvall had been previously married to actress Barbara Benjamin, actress Gail Youngs and dance instructor Sharon Brophy.

In 1964, Duvall wed actress Barbara Benjamin. At the time, Benjamin had two daughters from a previous relationship, Suzan, then 7, and Nancy, then 6. Duvall helped to raise them.

The pair split in 1975. "Things burn out," Duvall later told PEOPLE in 2003.

Duvall met his second wife, actor Gail Youngs, when he was starring in the Broadway production of American Buffalo in 1977 with her brother, actor John Savage.

"And I fell in love," she told The New York Times in 1983. According to the outlet, the pair were separated for 14 months after wrapping a film project, but reconciled and married in August 1982. They divorced four years later.

"Bobby's a magnificent person on some levels, with more joie de vivre than anyone I know," Youngs told PEOPLE in 2003. "But he's a tortured soul on other levels. He's just so driven by his need for perfection."

The To Kill a Mockingbird actor met his third wife, dancer Sharon Brophy, at a tango class in New York City in 1986. They married in 1991 at the actor's country home in Virginia, but Duvall filed for divorce in 1995.

Duvall met actor and director Luciana Duvall (née Pedraza) in 1996 by total chance. “I met my wife in Argentina,” he told Esquire in 2010. “The flower shop was closed, so I went to the bakery. If the flower shop had been open, I never would've met her."

They appeared alongside each other in the 2003 film Assassination Tango, which Duvall wrote and directed, and wed two years later.

After over two decades of marriage, Luciana announced Duvall's death on Feb. 16 in a post on Facebook.

"To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything," she wrote. "His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind."
