A previously unseen letter, which was handwritten by the Queen when she was just 10 years old and hidden under a bed for decades, is to be sold at an upcoming auction.
The touching note includes doodles of dogs, horses, and children. It was sent by the then-Princess Elizabeth, who was on holiday in Cornwall, to the head housemaid at Royal Lodge. Recipient Beatrice Stillman had recently joined the royal household and seemingly held onto the letter until her passing in 1993.
“Dear Beatrice, I am sending you some primroses we picked, wild,” the letter reads. “There are some pale pink ones as well as the yellow. It is very lovely here. We can go down onto the beach from the garden.”
“I hope the birds are well, and the goldfish haven’t died,” it went on. Elsewhere on the page, there are a number of drawings, including a girl called Mary and a dog named Jim. There’s also a pony jumping over a gate.
The Princess affectionately signed the letter, “Love from Elizabeth.” Sadly, the royal’s youth came to an abrupt end when, at 25, she ascended to the throne after her father’s shock death. She went on to rule for seven decades before passing away at the age of 96 in September 2022.
Speaking about the letter, Justin Matthews from Hansons Auctioneers, said in a press release that the letter gave him “goosebumps.”
The letter is expected to fetch over £4,000 ($5,400) when it goes up for auction on February 27 at Hansons Auctioneers’ Kent saleroom in the UK.
