Princess Diana hid a significant secret from then-Prince Charles during her pregnancy with Prince Harry.

The royal pair married in July 1981, announcing their first pregnancy with Prince William that November. In February 1984, Charles and Diana revealed they were expecting their second child, but throughout her pregnancy with Harry, Diana withheld one crucial detail from her former husband.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward reports that Charles was caught off guard after learning they had welcomed another son, though Diana was fully aware beforehand. It comes as King Charles is believed to be giving his son Prince Harry the silent treatment.

The late Princess discovered Harry would be a boy but chose not to inform Charles, attempting to protect his feelings since he wanted a daughter.

"Oddly, despite the closeness she had felt with Charles before Harry's birth, she never told him she was expecting another boy," Ingrid Seward writes in her biography, Catherine & Diana. "She knew he longed for a daughter, and her extreme vulnerability made her keep this piece of intimate information from him."

In Andrew Morton's book titled, Diana: Her True Story, Diana stated, regarding her relationship with Charles, that the period before Harry's arrival was "the closest we've ever, ever been and ever will be."

She also disclosed that Charles expressed disappointment upon discovering Harry was a boy. She revealed that he said, "Oh God, it's a boy. And he's even got red hair."

Recordings made by Diana, which formed the basis of her official biography, also disclosed that Charles' remarks caused distress within the Spencer family and left the late Queen Elizabeth deeply disappointed.

She said, "At Harry's christening, Charles went up to Mummy [Queen Elizabeth] and said 'we're so disappointed, we wanted a girl' and Mummy snapped his head off and said 'you should realise you are lucky to have a child that's normal'."

Diana further explained that this encounter had a damaging effect on the King's relationship with his mother, stating, "Ever since that day, the shutters have come down. That's what he does when he gets somebody answering back at him."
