Brittany Born, a plus-size Disney content creator, is opening up about how cruel online comments about her appearance and parenting affected her mental health
She tells PEOPLE that her platform is all about empowering moms to carve out time for self-care
Despite the negativity she received, she said the support from commenters and loved ones has turned the situation around
An Ohio-based mom who documents her monthly trips to Disney World is speaking out about receiving hate as a plus-size content creator.
In May, PEOPLE chatted with Brittany Born — who goes by @britsasmallworld on Instagram and TikTok — all about her frequent getaways to the Florida theme park that she does either as a solo day trip or as a vacation with her husband and kids.
But the experience of sharing her travels hasn't always been magical. Born says she received "unbelievably cruel" hate comments from strangers attacking her appearance and calling her a bad parent.
"Words can hurt, you know? Nobody wants to hear things about their appearance, nobody wants to hear things about them being a terrible mom," she tells PEOPLE. "I think people are so quick to post these horrific things without thinking about how that person is going to see that. You don't really know where their head is or if they're struggling."
After opening up about how the hate has affected her mental health, however, she's received an outpouring of support from followers and new fans who say they relate to her content as a Disney-loving plus-size mom.
Born posted multiple videos addressing the awful comments she was receiving, many of which she says stemmed from a "misconception" about her leaving her family behind to go to Disney World on her own. While her solo Disney trips are a way for her to carve out time for herself as a busy parent, the annual pass holder notes that she does bring her kids with her six times a year for fun family vacations too.
"I really just like to document my Disney journeys and talk about mothers doing things for themselves, and that does include my kids," she explains. "We do things together and then I do things for myself because I homeschool them, I work from home. I'm with my kids 24/7 — sometimes you just need that reset."
Born says she also thinks her content struck a nerve because not only is she advocating for moms to take time for themselves, but she also tends not to fit into the "traditional" content creator mold.

"It's really authentic to who I am," she says of her content. "I'm not going to be the most aesthetic person on the internet — I'm very real to who I am. I'm 35 years old and I chose to embrace my gray hair. It's just all those things that made me kind of go against the grain."
She adds that her platform also stands for empowering plus-size content creators and showing them that "you can be plus size and you can still make content and be successful at it."

"It's very vulnerable to put yourself out there as a plus-size person, even beyond just being a mom. I am plus-size, and I think that a lot of plus-size content creators, they do get a lot of hate," she says. "People are always commenting on your appearance or what you look like. And there's just this idea that if you're plus-size, you just don't care about your body, you don't care about your health, and that's just not the case."
Despite the negativity she received, Born says the amount of support she was getting after sharing her "raw and honest" videos turned the situation into something positive. She later posted a video of her crying after receiving a number of messages from social media users telling her that her content inspires them and to never stop sharing her life.

"Just to see all the comments from moms and other people saying how they like watching my videos because it gives them inspiration. There's been people that messaged me and said, 'I did a day trip because you did a day trip. You made me feel like I could do it.'" she says.
Born adds that the uplifting messages from strangers on the internet — in addition to her "supportive" husband and loved ones — helped to turn the situation around.
"It was just really encouraging to see the positivity and the people that were like, 'Please don't stop. We love watching your videos. We love your content.' It really did make such a huge difference. I cried because I couldn't believe how many messages and comments I was getting."
