Aren’t friendlies supposed to be non-events? Manchester United against Leeds United in Dublin always had the capacity to be lively but try explaining the half-hour that Bruno Fernandes experienced in one breath. It would be impossible.

There was only player the vast majority of crowd wanted to see in the grandiosely named Boyle Sports Cup and, in chronological order from his 60th minute introduction, he received a standing ovation, hit the bar, had a goal disallowed, missed a penalty in a shoot-out and lifted a trophy.

Most remarkably – and, certainly, worryingly – of all, he was central to the game being ended early as five young boys, one after the other, breached security and ran to him in the middle of pitch, all of them successfully posing for photos with the Portuguese.

You could say it was harmless fun but it should not have happened and the flummoxed faces that were pulled on the Manchester bench, as an army in high-visibility jackets stood and watched it all unfold, suggested they took a dim view.

It was a shame because in that cameo, Fernandes showed he has returned from the World Cup in excellent shape, the tempo of United’s play immediately lifting when he had the ball. It is wrong to make conclusions in the summer but you are on safe ground to state he will be integral to their ambitions.

This is stadium is steeped in history and another chapter was penned here, as the capacity crowd made this the highest attended soccer match in Ireland with 82,000 coming through the gates: it is a magnificent venue, one that would be well capable of hosting a Champions League final.

Michael Carrick hopes in years to come that is the stage where his team will be but, right now, it is a case of learning to walk again before they can run and he more than anyone will know how far off that target is, not that it will stop him trying to get there.

The one thing that is obvious about the way United play under him is the first thought from everyone is to go forward quickly. Yes, this was only a friendly but the ambition to be on the front foot and cause problems was evident from the start.

The team in red had much the better of the opening exchanges, with Diogo Dalot having the first shot that went over but unlike on July 25, when Mayo beat Kerry here in Gaelic Football’s All Ireland final, which went viral, nobody was cheering the sight of a ball clearing the bar.

It was like a home game for United and the majority got what they wanted in the 15th minute when a slick counterattack ended with Bryan Mbuemo sliding a pass into Joshua Zikzee, who rifled past James Trafford with a first-time finish.

Zirkzee is unlikely to be part of Carrick’s squad beyond the transfer window, with interest from clubs in Italy, and it would be disingenuous to suggest his career at Old Trafford has been successful but his attitude was exemplary and he played as if he was desperate to change his manager’s mind.

There may have been an anticipation that United would stride clear but this game was also about Leeds, whose summer has been encouraging and whose confidence from staying up last season has evidently enabled them to blossom.

You would be way off the mark if you include them in your conversations about which clubs are going to be relegated next May and the sense they showed to stay with Daniel Farke has paid off. They have bought some good players, not least goalkeeper James Trafford and Harry Wilson.

Trafford has done the right thing getting away from Manchester City and you could argue that he is already reaping the benefit of playing for a manager who wants him, as he made a fabulous save in the 22nd minute to thwart Zirkzee, who was convinced he was going to score again. It was all part of performance that led to him being named Player of the Match.

He was involved in the move that brought the Leeds equaliser, too, as his long clearance caused uncertainty and led to Tyler Fletcher being pickpocketed by Dan James and he nudged a pass into Brendon Aaronson, who kept his cool and danced into the area, ignoring Sanne Lammens, to finish.

It was an entertaining affair, mercifully lacking the bile that would usually bubble away when it is staged in England, and the longer the game advanced, the better Leeds looked. They finished the opening period strongly and came back after the restart, with 10 changes, in the same fettle.

Farke, whose team had shown their ability to score heavily when they pummelled Liverpool 4-2 in Chicago 10 days ago, would have taken plenty of encouragement but the perfectionist in him would have cursed the opportunities that were squandered early in the second period.

The misses proved costly as the game meandered out and the shoot-out went United’s way, after Harry Wilson and James Justin failed from 12 yards with Noussair Mazraoui thumping in the decisive kick. It really is never dull.

Enormous frustration for the masses who have wanted a Bruno goal. He’s just “scored” - right on the moment when our friend the stadium announcer bellowed the match was a sell out but never provided the actual figure – but a linesman’s flag has stopped him in his tracks. You fancy he will have one more involvement before the game creeps towards a penalty shootout.

Zirkzee’s trickery down the right leaves Justin in his wake but having done the hard bit he fluffs the cross, delivering it too high for a shot and too low for a header. Thompson tries to contort himself to reach it but no one is that flexible.

Couple of threatening crosses from Gnonto from the right just elude Calvert-Lewin and Alfie Cresswell, son of Richard, brother of Charlie, follows up the second to shoot from the edge of the box. Lammens gathers comfortably.

Just the 10 half-time changes for Leeds and the worst thing about that was the fact it gave the stadium announcer, who hadn’t grasped that he didn’t need to shout into a loud speaker system, the opportunity to screech unchecked for close to two minutes, leaving everyone with tinnitus. Give the wrong man a microphone and chaos will ensue. Anyway, we are underway in the second period and the one change the majority of the stadium wants to be see is the introduction of Bruno Fernandes. His presence would help United regain some impetus.

In the couple of minutes after the goal Manchester United almost punish Leeds’ high defensive line again but Muharemovic rides to the rescue. Bijol is a very good box defender but he lacks pace.

United’s start has been bright and confident and the system they playing is flipping between 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1 and the first thought is always to go forward. The goal they have just scored is indicative of how they have started and it’s a positive for Joshua Zirkzee, who has spent much of his time at Old Trafford under a cloud, to have finished it with aplomb. Whether it will be enough to keep him at Old Trafford for the long run remains to be seen, particularly as interest from Italy persists, but what can’t be doubted is his attitude. He looks sharp.

Leeds defend the corner fairly solidly but Manchester United recover possession 30 yards out and set up Dalot to have a crack with a dipping, swerving effort that Trafford pats down in front of his face and catches after it bounces.

Amad Diallo finds Mbeumo down the right and he tries to head the ball across the box but Muharemovic is well-placed to head it back out but an attempt to nod the ball back to Trafford goes astray and the £45m man can’t stop it going out for a corner.

Preview: Familiar foes in a historic setting

Good evening and welcome to live coverage of the pre-season friendly between Manchester United and Leeds United at a sold-out Croke Park in Dublin. Last year Leeds played Milan in the Irish capital and drew a crowd of 52,000 but at the GAA citadel, as I think I’m contractually obliged to call it, there will be 83,000 present, a testament to the Premier League’s reach and these two clubs’ popularity in Ireland founded on the exploits of Billy Whelan, Noel Cantwell, Johnny Giles, Roy Keane, Gary Kelly et al. It’s the first club match ever held at the stadium.

It’s a fixture that always stirs the blood and whenever it comes around you can guarantee that there will be reams of stuff about the War of the Roses, clash in styles, Busby and Revie, Bobby and Jack, large swathes of which this author has been guilty of producing. I’ll spare you all that today because while it’s relevant to fans of both clubs, they know it backwards. And it’s a match that has come around a wee bit too frequently in pre-season recently, first in Perth, Western Australia, in 2019 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side beat Marcelo Bielsa’s 4-0, then in 2023 in Oslo when Erik ten Haag’s second or third string defeated Daniel Farke’s threadbare, just relegated squad 2-0 and last year in Stockholm, which ended in a 0-0 draw between two scratch sides.

This one comes round later in the pre-season schedule than those three so we can expect to see stronger XIs, at least for part of the game. Leeds’ pre-season has gone well: after a 3-2 defeat by Wrexham in Tampa, they have beaten Sunderland in New Jersey, Liverpool in Chicago and RB Leipzig at Elland Road. Manchester United also lost to Wrexham (in Helsinki) then beat Rosenborg in Trondheim, Atlético in Stockholm and drew one apiece with the European champions, PSG, in Gothenburg last time out.
