Katie Couric shared the first photo of her granddaughter, Virginia Louise, born May 30, weighing 8 lbs. 5 oz. on June 17

Virginia is Couric's second grandchild, joining her 2-year-old brother Jay

Couric recently reflected on cherishing milestones after her late husband Jay Monahan missed many with their daughters, Ellie and Carrie

Katie Couric is a "very happy Gogo!"

On Wednesday, June 17, the journalist shared anInstagram post featuring her in a New York Knicks jersey, cradling her sleeping newborn baby granddaughter, who was wearing a floral onesie.

"Introducing Virginia Louise!" she started her happy caption. She also shared that the tot was born on May 30 and weighed 8 lbs. 5 ounces.

She went on to share that Virginia's mom, her daughter Ellie, 35, was "doing great," while Virginia's big brother, her first grandchild, Jay, 2, is "coping," with the arrival of his baby sister.

Couric also noted that she was a "very happy Gogo," the nickname she uses for Grandma.

Couric, 69, had shared the happy news that she was set to welcome her second grandchild just a few weeks before Virginia's arrival.

On April 30, at the Runway for Recovery event, she told PEOPLE, "My daughter, Ellie, is expecting her second child on June 5th." She added that it was going to be a "very exciting summer for Ellie and her husband Mark."

However, Couric did share one concern about the baby's arrival.

"I'm not sure how exciting it's gonna be for Jay to welcome a new baby into the house," she admitted of the toddler. "TBD on that. But that's really, really exciting."

The star went on to share that she's reached a stage in her life where she's learned to really appreciate the milestones.

"I really cherish and relish and appreciate happy occasions, like weddings and births and graduations," she shared, adding that her late husband, Jay Monahan — who her grandson is named after — had to miss out on these moments after his death from colon cancer at the age of 42 in 1998.

"My husband missed so many milestones with our daughters," she added, revealing her daughter Ellie and Carrie were just 6 and 2 when he died.

"He missed watching them grow into these incredible young women. He missed proms and parent-teacher conferences and college acceptances and graduations and weddings," she emotionally shared.

Couric is mom to daughters Ellie and Carrie, 30, with Monahan. She remarried John Molner in 2014, who has two kids from his previous marriage.
