Hailey Bieber reflected on her 2022 mini-stroke and subsequent heart surgery

The medical emergency left her "hyper-aware" of her body and "more nervous" about staying on top of her health

Hailey Bieber is reflecting on her new approach to health since her “crazy” medical emergency.

During the Wednesday, Feb. 18 episode of influencer Jake Shane's Therapuss podcast, the 29-year-old opened up about how her perspective has changed since suffering a mini-stroke back in 2022.

“I’m obsessed with medicine,” she began. “I just am so fascinated with the body and medicine and doctors. I love it.”

“A couple of years ago, I had a crazy medical situation. I had a mini stroke,” she explained. “Then I found that I had this heart defect that I was born with, so I had to get surgery for it, which sounds really crazy, but they went through my groin and I was in and out of the hospital the same day.”

After undergoing a corrective procedure, Hailey admitted that she started taking her health a lot more seriously.

“That situation made me a little bit extra hyper-aware of my body and a little bit more nervous about things and staying on top of them,” she said. “But I’ve just always been really focused and fascinated on health.”

The model admitted that the health scare is also what led to her starting her skincare and makeup brand, Rhode.

“My obsession with skincare also comes from my obsession with medicine,” she added.

In March 2022, Hailey was admitted to the hospital with stroke-like symptoms caused by a blood clot in her brain. Upon her hospitalization, tests revealed that she had suffered a TIA – a Transient Ischemic Attack, often called a mini-stroke.

She was then diagnosed with a patent foramen ovale or PFO, a small opening in the heart that didn't close the way it should have after birth.

The mom of one underwent a procedure to close the PFO, describing it as “the scariest thing I've ever gone through," she recalled on The Run-Through with Vogue podcast.

At the time, Hailey revealed that she had PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder] in the aftermath of the mini-stroke, sharing that it was “very triggering” returning to Palm Springs, where she was at during her health scare.

"I struggled with a lot of anxiety after. I struggled with a little bit of PTSD, just like the fear of maybe it was gonna happen again," she said. "It was just a feeling that I was, like, I never want to experience that ever again. I mean, it was so terrifying, so jarring, so discombobulating in every single way that you could imagine."

“It gets easier and easier with time to be able to talk about it. I'm just really grateful that I was able to have had amazing doctors, and nurses and people that helped me get to the bottom of what actually happened," she explained. "I look back at it and it could've been so much worse."
