¡Ay, carumba! It’s official, folks! After 20 long years and several false starts and delays, we’re finally getting The Simpsons Movie 2. For years fans have been begging for the follow-up to the 2007 smash hit film based on television's longest-running animated series, and now we finally have confirmation that a sequel is on the way. Disney-owned 20th Century Studios broke the news in September 2025, sharing a photo of Homer holding a doughnut decorated with number 2 sprinkles and the words, “Homer’s coming back for seconds,” scrawled across the top. Towards the bottom of the photo, in creator Matt Groening’s signature font, are the words, “In Theaters July 23, 2027.” (That date has since been changed to September 3, 2027, to avoid a conflict with the release of the Minecraft Movie sequel.)Outside of the release date, we don’t know much else about the upcoming film. It’s speculated that the show’s long-running cast of voice actors will reprise their roles in the upcoming movie (longtime voice contributors Maggie Roswell and Tress MacNeille are listed on the film's IMDb page, while the main cast are listed on the Disney fan wiki), and we might be in for a treat with a few celebrity guests. Beyond that, everything else has been pretty much kept under wraps. While we’ll just have to wait and see what clues we get next about the upcoming film, a few eagle-eyed fans have already spotted an easter egg hiding in a previously aired episode of the show. Shortly after the original film's release, in the opening credits of Episode 1, Season 19, Bart is seen writing on the chalkboard the phrase “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie.” Thus, the lore behind The Simpsons' uncanny ability to predict the future continues. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any further announcements. At one point, it was rumored that Pitbull, Tyler the Creator and Elton John would have voice roles. It may or may not be true, but their names were removed from IMDb pretty quickly after it was posted, so it was either a hoax or the production wants to keep that information under wraps for now.
