D’Angelo’s son made a rare comment about his late father's death.

In a clip for the ABC News Live special, Love & Neo-Soul: Honoring D’Angelo, Michael Archer Jr. spoke about the gravity of D'Angelo's death last year.

Archer Jr. reflected on Lauryn Hill's tribute to his dad and Roberta Flack at the 2026 Grammy Awards and called it "bittersweet." “I love the tribute," he said, noting he that in his mind he'd want to honor his dad and mom Angie Stone, who also died in 2025, together.

While looking at old photos of him with his parents, he reflected on discovering his father was sick with pancreatic cancer around June or July 2025.

"His voice as sounded weak like but he was still trying to talk to me like," says Archer Jr., who then found out D'Angelo (born Michael Eugene Archer) was in the hospital.

When asked how he's managing the loss of both his parents in one year, as well as his grandmother, he said he's been making music and lifting weights.

"I just started with a therapist," say Archer Jr. "That's been helping me"

Archer Jr. then reflected on the challenges of being without D'Angelo now.

"I feel, like, cheated in a sense, you know, especially with my father. I was just excited for what the future held for us," he said.

Archer Jr. noted that as he gets older people tell him he looks "more like his father," though he thinks he looks like both his parents.
