Chet Hanks breaks down confusing viral confrontation with Eric André amid years-long feud

Chet Hanks publicly confronted Eric André for “trashing” him after their 2023 interview.

The duo engaged in a heated exchange that ultimately saw them pulled apart by security.

Their years-long beef dates back to Hanks’ chaotic appearance on The Eric André Show, which led the host to describe him as “emotionally disturbed.”

Chet Hanks and Eric André have taken their years-long feud to the next level with a fiery confrontation.

Three years after the comedian slammed the 36-year-old son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson as “emotionally disturbed,” Chet spotted André at ComplexCon in Los Angeles, and escalated their disagreement.

“Finally ran into [Eric André], who apparently travels to ComplexCon with 4 security guards (because the environment makes him uneasy),” Hanks captioned an Oct. 5 video of their heated exchange. “And who had NO MEMORY WHATSOEVER of trashing me to the media after I outshined him on his own show!!”

Chet complained that the Emmy winner was being “sheltered by his security team,” before claiming that André began “foaming at the mouth and admitted it was because he had a problem with me ‘mocking Caribbean culture’ when I did my Jamaican accent all those years ago.”

Hanks, who came under fire in 2019 for using a faux Jamaican Patois accent to congratulate his dad on a Golden Globe win, was not impressed with this alleged explanation.

He continued, “WHO KNEW that in addition to the brain rot and poop joke humor he is known for, Eric is also such a passionate cultural activist!!! Great running into you Eric!!!!”

In the video, the “White Boy Summer” rapper approached André from behind, putting a hand on his shoulder to get his attention. André looked surprised to see Hanks but appeared friendly, extending a hand and greeting him with, “What’s up?”

Hanks did not take the offered hand, but left his own hand on André’s shoulder as the conversation swiftly took a serious turn. While Hanks’ words were inaudible in the video, André at one point responded with, “What’d I say?”

The conversation escalated further, as both men removed their sunglasses and began raising their voices. Before long, security guards stepped in to pull them apart.

While being escorted away by his security team, André paused to yell back at Hanks, who continued speaking in his direction. As André departed, Hanks turned to face the camera, laughing about the interaction and telling the gathered crowd, “That was a long time coming.”

Representatives for André did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment.

The bad blood between André and Hanks dates back to the actor’s chaotic 2023 appearance on The Eric André Show. Though the episode was well-received by fans of the show, André didn’t speak very highly of Hanks in the aftermath.

“He broke our crew,” André told Rolling Stone that same year. “He broke us down.”

André added, “He is … emotionally disturbed. He stole a motorcycle and rode it around. He almost knocked a bunch of grips and gaffers off their ladders. It was very dangerous. He tried to prank us back, but we edited out all his bulls---! He’s not well.”

Hen then made reference to Chet’s brother, asking, “How did Colin Hanks come out so good and Chet Hanks come out so bad?”

Chet made his anger known at the time, claiming in a social media video that he was simply trying to match André’s “weird outlandish troll” energy on the show.

“At one point, he has a dude come and jump a dirt bike on the stage,” the Running Point actor recalled. “He must not have known I ride dirt bikes because I picked that s--- up and start riding it around the set. Everybody’s like, ‘No, no, no, don’t do that. You could get hurt!’ I’m like, ‘Chill I just popped a little wheelie.’”

Hanks continued, “I was just playing along with your schtick, dude. But it is what it is. Some people are just straight bitches. Apparently Eric André is one.”

André responded at the time by telling followers, “Everything Chet said about me is a f---king boldface lie. F---ing liar. And I dare him to take a f---ing DNA test to prove that Tom Hanks is his f---ing father.”
