Words never seemed to get in the way for Freddie Jackson.

The Grammy-nominated singer rose to fame for heartfelt R&B songs that encouraged men to let their guard down and share their feelings. “I’m going to be romantic — both in my life and in my music,” he told The Washington Post in November 1986. “So I try to find songs that will help guys who are afraid to express those things.”

One of those ballads was “You Are My Lady.” The 1985 single topped the R&B chart, helped Jackson’s debut album go platinum and earned him a Grammy nomination the following year, according to Billboard. It remained one of the biggest hits of his career, which spanned four decades until his death at the age of 69 on Oct. 5.

So, what was the story behind the hit? Here’s everything to know about Freddie Jackson’s “You Are My Lady,” including the real-life love that inspired it.

According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Jackson worked with songwriter Barry Eastmond on six of the eight songs he included on his debut album, Rock Me Tonight — including “You Are My Lady.”

Eastmond was early in his career, and the ballad marked his first big hit. He later revealed to the New York University Steinhardt News that it was inspired by his wife.

“My family inspires me,” Eastmond said in December 2022. “My wife inspired my first big hit record, it was a tribute to her called ‘You Are My Lady,’ by Freddie Jackson. I’m inspired all the time.”

Jackson’s mom was the first person to hear the track

Before the soul singer released “You Are My Lady” to the world, he played it for a special audience of one: his mother.

When asked in a July 2018 interview with OriginalRock.net to name his most memorable career moment, Jackson recalled her emotional reaction.

“Playing ‘You Are my Lady’ for my mom after I first recorded it,” he said. “She was the first to listen it and it brought her to tears.”

According to Billboard, the singles helped the album go platinum and hold the top spot on the publication’s R&B chart for 16 consecutive weeks.

The success also had staying power. In its March 1991 retrospective on Jackson’s career, Billboard noted that his debut album was still selling nearly six years after its release.

His follow-up, Just Like the First Time, enjoyed an even longer run atop the R&B albums chart, spending 26 weeks at No. 1 and going double-platinum.

“You Are My Lady” was nominated for a Grammy Award

The song’s popularity led to another milestone achievement for the singer. Jackson was nominated for not one, but two Grammy Awards in 1986: Best New Artist and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “You Are My Lady.”

Jackson later recalled a playful moment with famed R&B singer Luther Vandross ahead of the event. (That year, Vandross’ album The Night I Fell in Love had also been nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.)

In an August 2020 episode of Conversations with Freddie Jackson, he said the “Never Too Much” singer stopped by his room to wish him luck at the awards.

“I just wanted to wish you well and give you this card and tell you to break a leg,” Jackson remembered Vandross telling him, before jokingly adding, “Actually, I want you to break both legs.”

In the end, Stevie Wonder’s album In Square Circle took home the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

The R&B singer told The Washington Post he wanted to exemplify vulnerability for men, and he felt “You Are My Lady” did that.

“I try to find songs that will help guys who are afraid to express those things,” Jackson said. “When my song, ‘You Are My Lady,’ came out last year a lot of guys came up to me and said, ‘Gee, Freddie, that record really said what I wanted to say but couldn’t. When my lady and I have a fight, I can put your record on and she gets the message.’ ”
